National Beer Day

Today in the UK is National Beer Day, not that we ever need an excuse to have a pint. With 7 out of every 10 drinks sold in UK pubs being a beer, its clear this is one of our favourite beverages. Bakes is very proud to be a Sheffield based company with the city just being voted the ‘The World’s Best Beer City’. With around 400 unique beers being available in the pubs here, we can clearly see how Sheffield can claim a stake as part of the craft beer revolution.  Check out more about the Sheffield beer scene here. The men of Britain seem to be just as keen to get baking as women these days. This could be influenced by the male celebrity bakers we often see on our TV screens such as Paul Hollywood and Jamie Oliver.  Here at Bakes we decided that we couldn’t let this day go by without making a boozy bake for you guys to have a go at. We’ve therefore created Chocolate and Guinness Cupcake topped with a delicious Cream Cheese Icing and finished with a Chocolate Moustache. Even better…this Sunday is Father’s Day, so why not whip these up as a prezzie for your Dad? We’re sure they’ll go down a treat! archive- LG - 5 (3) archive- LG - 1 (28)-1 Ingredients (makes x12) Cupcakes 250ml Guinness 250g Butter (unsalted) softened 400g Golden caster sugar 2 Eggs, large 1tsp Vanilla extract 140ml milk 280g Plain white flour 2tsp Bicarbonate of soda ½tsp Baking powder 3tbsp Cocoa powder   Chocolate Moustache 75g dark chocolate   Icing 50g Butter (unsalted) softened 300g Icing sugar 125g Cream cheese   Method Preheat the oven to 170 degrees and line a 12 hole cupcake tin with large cases. Pour the Guinness into a large saucepan with the butter and heat gently until butter has melted. In a bowl, mix the eggs, vanilla, milk and add to the pan. Sift together the flour, bicarb and baking powder in a large bowl and add the sugar. Pour the contents of the saucepan over the dry ingredients. Mix until well combined and spoon into the cases (the mixture is quite runny so you can pour it into a jug before pouring it into the cases). Bake for 25 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. Meanwhile, melt the chocolate in a glass bowl over a pan of simmering water, being careful not to let the water touch the bottom of the bowl. Pour the melted chocolate into a piping bag and snip the end. Pipe moustaches onto a sheet of grease proof paper and leave to set (you can print a template off the internet if needed). Place into the fridge to set. Make the icing by mixing the butter and icing sugar until smooth. Add the cream cheese and mix again. Pipe onto of the cakes using a large star nozzle. Add a chocolate moustache to finish.   Share your boozy bakes with us on Instagram using the hashtag #bakesbox or tag us @bakesbox in your photos!
